Why do you need the exam and how does the written test work?

If you are a student in Korea, you most likely don't need an explanation of what TOPIK is. Usually, students need to pass this exam to successfully graduate from university. But if you are already working in Korea and haven't delved into the details of this test – let me explain now: why might you need TOPIK?

📌 Why is TOPIK needed?

The most obvious reason is official confirmation of Korean language proficiency. This is a serious state exam, conducted by the National Institute for International Education under the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea.

‼️ Any illegal machinations with the exam (impersonation, buying answers, etc.) are strictly monitored and punished – up to criminal liability and a ban from participating in the exam.

TOPIK is a significant advantage:

- for official employment (some companies require a certain level);

- when applying for internships in Korean companies;

- for visa applications: TOPIK can speed up and simplify the process of obtaining F2, F5, E7, D10, E9, and others.

TOPIK Levels – from 1 to 6

There are a total of 6 levels in the TOPIK exam, and here is an approximate breakdown:

Level 1:

Can be obtained if you have the most basic communication skills, for example: greeting, self-introduction, shopping at the market,

ordering food in a restaurant, etc.

Level 2:

Can be obtained if you: understand simple sentences, can use Korean for everyday tasks, can communicate in restaurants, banks, post offices, hospitals, etc.

Level 3:

Can be obtained if you: navigate everyday speech fluently, have no difficulty in everyday communication in Korean.

🔺 Starting from this level, the difficulty of the exam significantly increases.

Level 4:

Can be obtained if you: not only cope with everyday communication but also understand complex topics: news, social issues, cultural materials, etc.

📌 Usually required for: university graduation, admission to master's programs, employment in Korean companies.

Level 5:

Can be obtained if you: confidently use Korean in academic and professional settings, are able to understand lectures, articles, business correspondence, and conduct business negotiations.

📌 A holder of Level 5 can be considered very fluent.

Level 6:

Can be obtained if you: are very fluent in Korean even in complex scientific and professional topics.

📌 With this level: your literacy is above average even compared to native speakers, all career and academic opportunities in Korea are open to you.

I recently took the written exam and want to share my experience.

If you plan to obtain Level 1–2, you need to register for TOPIK I (cost – 40,000 won). For levels 3 to 6 – choose TOPIK II (cost – 55,000 won).

Any online registration in Korea happens with incredible speed! Popular concert tickets, reservations at trendy restaurants, lectures by top professors – everything is snapped up instantly. And TOPIK is no exception! Therefore, my advice: register immediately when registration opens. Seats in Seoul, in particular, disappear in seconds.

I recommend choosing at least 2–3 convenient exam centers in advance and acting according to a pre-planned strategy.

Registration is done on the website: www.topik.go.kr and usually starts at 10:00 AM.

After successful registration and payment of the exam fee, you can later print the exam permit (수험표), which contains all important information.

Be sure to bring a photo ID, correction tape, and print your exam permit.

I took the exam at South Seoul University.

In principle, finding your classroom is not difficult: just follow other participants. However, it's better to check the building and room number indicated on your permit in advance. Organizers usually put up banners and signs so that no one gets lost.

Do not be late for the exam! The start time is also indicated on your permit. When you enter the classroom, there will already be name stickers on the desks – take your seat.
