During periods of extreme heat, the employer is obliged to take measures if employees are working at a perceived temperature of 31°C or higher.

What must be provided at the workplace:

  • cool and clean water;
  • a place to rest in the shade or shelter;
  • cooling devices: fans, portable air conditioners, awnings;
  • regular breaks;
  • cooling gear, such as cooling clothing or vests.

At 33°C and above, it is recommended to provide a rest of at least 20 minutes every 2 hours.
At 35°C and above, outdoor work should ideally be reduced or suspended during the hottest hours.
At 38°C and above, it is recommended to stop outdoor work, except for urgent and emergency cases.

Symptoms of heat illness: high body temperature, heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, cramps, confusion, or loss of consciousness.

If someone feels unwell: move them to a cool place, loosen their clothing, and cool their body with water or a fan. If the person is unconscious — do not give them water and call 119 immediately.
